Analysis of Irrigation Water Use Efficiency

Irrigation is vital for global food security, yet it is also a major consumer of freshwater resources. As populations grow and climate change intensifies, the need to optimize irrigation water use becomes increasingly critical. Traditional approaches to irrigation often prioritize maximizing crop yield without fully considering the efficiency of water use, leading to wastage and environmental degradation. This necessitates a paradigm shift towards a more holistic and sustainable approach to irrigation water management. This paper aims to provide a critical review of existing paradigms in irrigation water management, focusing on different approaches to defining, measuring, and improving irrigation efficiency. By examining the strengths and weaknesses of various efficiency indicators and management strategies, this review seeks to identify best practices and highlight areas for future research. Ultimately, this work aims to contribute to the development of more sustainable and resilient irrigation systems that can meet the growing demand for food while minimizing environmental impact.
